“What’s in it for me then?”
Good question.Here’s the answer…not much.
At least not If that’s the first question that you bring to church. There’s not much in it for you if you’re looking for three years of comfy church life without any real edge or purpose.
There’s not much in it for you if you’re looking for a place where there’s no real demands or empowering call to grow in God.
As a young general, Napoleon Bonaparte had this sixth sense of how to inspire leadership and responsibility for a common cause. During one battle there was a heavy artillery battery that was placed in such a dangerous forward position that few thought it would ever be manned. But Napoleon knew how to connect with the hearts of his men. He hung a placard on the gun position that read“The battery of men without fear”
It never lacked operators for the duration of the war.
Yeah, I know that it’s rhetoric and that you’re probably sick of what can sound like empty rhetoric.
But what might happen if you begin to ask a different question, a question like…
“What can I give here?”
That’s a question that opens the door to a whole bunch of other questions like…
1. Could you plant a church in a major town or city in Yorkshire when you graduate?
2. Could you become part of a community that uses its resources to serve the city instead of sucking the life out of it?
3. What if your degree became a means to use what you have to serve and give to people who will never have the opportunities that you do?
4. Can you see God using you as a pioneer in our city by helping us to establish a holistic ministry to the poor of ALL kinds?
Whatever question you rock up with, you’re going to find us working hard to make leaders and send leaders (male and female). You’ll find us looking at a bigger picture and learning how God’s story is not one that has ego at the centre of it, but one that subverts our own story so that we find ourselves written into his big, eternal story in Jesus the Messiah. If you’re looking for organic, non-shiny, non-religious and missional church life that stretches you, grows you and sends you, then you might be getting close
