There will be light…
By Alan Rose on Tue 09th Aug 2011
“At the Beginning the reality of darkness was the background for God’s insisting that this reality should be succeeded by light”
Think for a minute about the way that darkness works in the world (I don’t mean darkness here in a metaphorical way describing moral darkness, although perhaps you might think the point I’ll soon make counts in that way too).
God said, “Let there be light…”
God’s speaking light into being means that, in John Goldingay’s words
“God’s drive is toward light, not darkness”
That must mean then that whatever ‘darkness’ you are currently facing or enduring is only the precursor for the glorious, radiant, eye-squinting dawning of light from God! Darkness is not permanent in God’s economy.
Darkness can take many forms.
Confusion.
Pain.
Loss.
Uncertainty.
If God’s light cannot be extinguished and is not defeated by darkness (whatever darkness it may be) as John 1 boldly asserts, then the darkest days are nothing less than the preparation for beautiful, incandescent light.
Confidence.
Clarity.
Wholeness.
Restoration.
If you’re currently ‘in the dark’, may you find strength and courage in this person who calls himself the ‘Light of the world’. May you be hopeful in heartache, trusting in turmoil and patient in the pain.
Darkness is temporary - let there be light!
